Jon Scheyer: Duke staffer 'fine' after being trampled in UNC court storm

Duke coach Jon Scheyer provided an update and further context on the team staff member who was punched in the face during the court storm after the Blue Devils' 71-68 loss at rival North Carolina on Saturday.

"He's fine. But after the game, what happened was I came back in the locker room and I see he's got a bloody lip and he's disheveled and he didn't know what happened," Scheyer told reporters Monday. "He got trampled on the floor. That was my main concern after the game and that's why I said what I said.

"It was not a good situation. But he's doing better, he's fine. Ready to move on. I don't have anything more to say other than that was a very unsafe situation for him, our staff, our families, our players."

Tar Heels fans stormed the court twice, once prematurely after Seth Trimble's go-ahead 3-pointer with four-tenths of a second left on the clock and once again when the game was officially over.

North Carolina athletic director Bubba Cunningham apologized to Scheyer after the game, and the school was fined $50,000 by the Atlantic Coast Conference.

North Carolina coach Hubert Davis confirmed Monday morning that he had also been in contact with Scheyer about the incident.

While the loss was Duke's first since Dec. 20, snapping a 10-game winning streak, Scheyer was far more frustrated about the safety issue when talking to reporters after the game.

"For me, it's hard for me to talk about the game when I was most concerned just for the safety of our players after the game," Scheyer said Saturday. "I don't want to make it about that because Carolina, they played a great game to win, and that's a heartbreaking loss for our team.

"I got staff members that got punched in the face. My family pushing people away, trying to not get trampled. And that's not what this game is about. You give them all the credit in the world. It's not about the game, but obviously that was a scary ending, and this rivalry is not about that."

Lindsey Vonn tore her left ACL but nine days later put on a brace and let it fly in the women's downhill at theMilan Cortina Olympics. It ended badly, withVonn crashing early in the raceand breaking a bone in her left leg.

Other Winter Olympic athletes have faced hard decisions about whether to compete with serious injuries.

Here's a look:

Majdic wins bronze with broken ribs, punctured lung

The 2010 Vancouver Games was the third Olympics for cross-country skier Petra Majdic of Slovenia. She had yet to win a medal. On the day of the women's individual sprint classic, she slipped while on her warm-up lap before the qualification time trial and fell about 10 feet into a gully.

"I was starting to scream badly. With that scream, I start to feel really bad pain in my back,"she told the Olympic Channel. "Somehow I climbed out of that hole."

Majdic powered through the qualification run and then saw a doctor, who gave her the OK to continue, she explained. She went back to the slopes and got through the quarterfinals and semifinals — andfinished third in the finalto take the bronze medal.

The pain was "killing me," but she had told herself "do not come back to Slovenia without a medal."

Majdic had to be helped onto the podium and was later hospitalized.

It turned out she had several broken ribs and a punctured lung, a further exam showed, according to Slovenia's state news agency.

Goggia takes silver medal on damaged knee

Italian skier Sofia Goggia knows a bit about racing with an injured knee, too. She sustained a partially torn knee ligament less than a month before winning thewomen's downhill silver medalat the 2022 Beijing Games.

Italy's team had said Goggia also had a "minor fracture" in that leg and some tendon damage.

She had been told she needed to use crutches for at least 10 days after her crash. She gave it three — and then started preparing to race.

Goggia even fell on a practice run and told her coach "I don't know if I can do this." Ultimately, she came close to repeating as Olympic champion, after having won gold at the 2018 Pyeongchang Games.

On Sunday,Goggia added a bronze medalto her Olympic collection.

Canadian moguls skier competes 1 month after ACL tear

Philippe Marquis relied on messages like "Keep Fighting" and "What ACL" to stay motivated after tearing his right ACL during training in Utah a month before the Pyeongchang Olympics in 2018. The Canadian moguls skier used a Sharpie to write the messages on his gloves. They included "Engage" and "Fire."

The Quebec native finished 20th.

Chargers reportedly hire former Jets, Dolphins head coach Adam Gase after 5-year hiatus

Adam Gase will be back on the sidelines after five years away from the game. The Los Angeles Chargers reportedly hired Adam Gase in an offensive assistant coach role, according toNFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

Gase was formerly the head coach of the New York Jets and Miami Dolphins. He had a combined 32-48 record in his two stints as a head coach. The 47-year-old was also the former offensive coordinator of the Denver Broncos and the Chicago Bears. During his previous stops, Gase worked closely with Peyton Manning, Jay Cutler and Sam Darnold.

Gase is now expected to work closely with Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert. Last season, Herbert threw for 3,727 yards, 27 touchdowns and 13 interceptions despite playing through a fractured left hand late in the season. The 27-year-old quarterback is a two-time Pro Bowler and the 2020 Offensive Rookie of the Year.

Last season, the Chargers ranked 18th in passing yards and did not have a receiver with over 800 receiving yards.

Gase will be part of the coaching overhaul that the Chargers have made this offseason. After the Chargers' 16-3 wild-card loss to the New England Patriots, the team fired offensive coordinator Greg Roman. Former Miami Dolphins head coachMike McDanielreplaced Roman as offensive coordinator.

On the defensive side, the Chargers hiredChris O'Learyas defensive coordinator afterJesse Minterwas hired as the Baltimore Ravens head coach.O'Learywas previously the defensive coordinator at Western Michigan.

The Pirates are signing veteran DH Marcell Ozuna, AP source says

Veteran slugger Marcell Ozuna is heading to Pittsburgh.

The 35-year-old free agent has reached an agreement with the Pirates on a one-year deal worth $12 million, a person familiar with the agreement told The Associated Press on Monday. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the deal is pending Ozuna passing a physical.

Ozuna would give the Pirates another experienced bat to potentially boost a lineup that was among the worst in the majors in 2025. The right-handed Ozuna hit .232 with 21 home runs and 68 RBIs last season for Atlanta.

Ozuna would make $10.5 million in 2026 and has a mutual club option for $16 million in 2027 with a $1.5 million buyout.

The 39-year-old, five-time All-Star and 2013 NL MVP, who has spent 12 of his 17 seasons in the majors with the Pirates, remains unsigned after hitting .239 with 13 homers while serving primarily as the club's designated hitter.

Ozuna is a three-time All-Star himself and a career .269 hitter in 13 seasons with Miami, St. Louis and Atlanta. The native of the Dominican Republic has batted over .300 three times, most recently in 2024.

One of the few places where Ozuna has struggled is PNC Park, his potential new home. Ozuna is a career .225 hitter with just one home run in 36 games at the ballpark that has been historically difficult for right-handed hitters.

The Pirates are banking on Ozuna figuring it out to give a left-handed dominant lineup a little balance. Lowe, O'Hearn and outfielder Oneil Cruz are lefties. Outfielder Bryan Reynolds is a switch-hitter.

The Pirates begin spring training when pitchers and catchers report to their complex in Bradenton, Florida, later this week.

Duke surges to No. 11 in AP Top 25 women's poll with 15-game win streak; UConn-UCLA still 1-2

Duke climbed up to No. 11 in The Associated Press women's basketballTop 25 pollon Monday thanks to a 15-game winning streak.

The Blue Devils took over sole possession of first-place in the ACC last week with aone-point victoryover then-No. 6 Louisville. Duke, which jumped six places this week, hasn't lost since a 16-point defeat to LSU on Dec. 4 that left the team 3-6.

UConn remained the unanimous No. 1 team in the poll as the Huskies continue to steamroll through the regular season. They received all 31 first-place votes from a national media panel after routing DePaul by 46 points and Butler by 32 last week. UConn has won 20 consecutive games by at least 25 points — the longest such streak by a Division I team in over 25 years.

UCLA, South Carolina and Texas followed the Huskies. The Bruins edged then-No. 8 Michiganby three pointsSunday to remain in first and undefeated in the Big Ten. The Longhornsbeat LSU, which dropped one spot to sixth. Vanderbilt moved back up to fifth.

Michigan, Ohio State, Louisville and Oklahoma round out the top 10 this week.

Falling just short

Three of Michigan's four losses this season have come by three points to No. 1 UConn, No. 2 UCLA and No. 5 Vanderbilt. The Wolverines have shown they can consistently play with the best teams in the country.

Conference supremacy

The SEC remained the top conference with nine teams in the poll. The Big Ten is next with seven. The Big 12 has four teams, the Atlantic Coast Conference has three, and the Big East and Ivy League each have one.

Games of the week

No. 17 TCU at No. 12 Baylor, Thursday. First place in the Big 12 will be on the line as the Bears have a one-game lead in the standings on the Horned Frogs, who also host third-place West Virginia on Sunday.

No. 24 Princeton at Columbia, Friday. The top spot in the Ivy League will be on the line as the Tigers visit the Lions. Princeton holds a one-game lead in the standings over Columbia and Harvard. The Lions handed the Tigers their lone loss in conference play when they met two weeks ago.

The second-year quarterback credited the first-year head coach of the New England Patriots — who won NFL coach of the year on Feb. 5 — following the team's 29-13 loss to the Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl LX on Sunday, Feb. 8.

"He was the heartbeat, no doubt about that," Maye, 23,said as his voice waveredat the postgame presser. "He was a big reason why we're here. He's always the same and I look forward to my relationship with him for a long time."

He added, "He's a great person and a hell of a football coach."

Maye and the Patriots struggled to get going for most of the game, stifled by the Seahawks' defense.

The signal-caller finished with a 27-of-43 line for 295 passing yards and two touchdowns, but most of those stats came in the fourth quarter when the game was already out of reach.

Maye also praised his team while speaking to reporters after the game. He became choked up at several points in the post-game presser.

"It hurts no doubt, definitely hurts. It's been a long ride but they played better than us tonight and they deserved to win that game," Maye said. "Speaking for the whole team and myself, just what a journey it's been for us. I love this team, all those guys in the locker room and we left it all on the field and I know a lot of guys did that tonight, but we just came up short we didn't play our best and that's what happens."

At another point, he told reporters, "This team was awesome. I'm so proud. That's probably the reason I'm choked up most. This team is something that I'm just glad to be a part of," perCBS News.

On Feb. 5 in San Francisco, Vrabel, 50, received the COTY nod at the NFL Honors, where he was lauded for 10-win turnaround of the franchise following consecutive 4-13 seasons.

Vrabel's equal parts intensity and affection toward his players rubbed off on the team this year — from the beginning of the season when he showed he would go to bat for any of them.

Last August on the eve of the season's start, during a practice scrimmage against the Washington Commanders,the coach jumped into the frayto break up a skirmish between players.

"That's what we're trying to build, and it starts with the head coach intensity, bringing it every day, taking no crap when we're out there on the field," Maye told reporters at the time. "The mentality, I like it. That's what you want."

Had the Patriots won, the retired linebacker would have become the first person ever to win a Super Bowl as a player and as a coach for the same franchise.

For Maye —who received a painkilling shotin his right shoulder before the game — his time in the spotlight on the sport's biggest stage was not a memorable one.

"I'd like to go back to the beginning and redo it," the North Carolina standout told reporters.

As Cadillac races to first F1 season, insiders advise patience for U.S. fans

Cadillac has become the first American auto giant to step into the fiercely competitive world of Formula One with a dedicated team. The storied U.S. brand unveiled the official team livery for its inaugural 2026 season during theSuper BowlSunday night.

The Super Bowl ad, which aired during the fourth quarter, shows the black and white livery. It features part of President John F. Kennedy's 1962 speech in which he said, "We choose to go to the moon in this decade and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard."

"That challenge is one that we are willing to accept ... and one which we intend to win," the edited speech said in the ad. The short feature closed out with the phrase: "THE MISSION BEGINS."

Leading Cadillac's effort is team principal Graeme Lowdon, who's built the team from the ground up, including new facilities in Indiana, the home of Indycar; North Carolina, the home of NASCAR; and Silverstone, England, the home of F1.

Speaking with CBS before the livery reveal, Lowdon called the road to get Cadillac into the F1 game "lengthy, with lots of twists and turns."

He recently shared that Cadillac had hired more than 500 people to join the new team, from a pool of some 143,000 applicants.

"There's a lot of expectation, and quite rightly so," Lowdon told CBS News. "General Motors is a hugely respected and impressive entity ... so there is that pressure, but that's what Formula One's about."

On the track, the American brand will be represented by former Mercedes team driver Valtteri Bottas, originally from Finland, and Mexican former Red Bull driver Sergio Perez. Widely considered to be veterans in the sport, they have a total of 16 Grand Prix victories and more than 500 race starts between them.

Having that level of experience behind the wheel, for an otherwise new team, was the chief motivator behind signing those two drivers, according to Lowdon.

"These guys know how to win," he said. "But above all else, they have an ability to gel a team together, so they're the focal point for the engineering activities, the garage activities, everything to do with operating a team at the highest level."

A slow start in a fast sport?

Experts say American fans hoping Cadillac will deliver a blockbuster first season as it steps into the ring against longtime heavyweights such as Ferrari and Mercedes may be disappointed.

The odds of Cadillac winning an F1 race, or even finishing on the podium this season, aren't generally considered very strong.

A winning Formula One car, and a winning team behind it, can take at least several seasons to develop, and require consistent investment.

Ross Brawn, the man widely credited as the architect behind German F1 sensationMichael Schumacher's success, told CBS News at the 2026 Autosport Awards in London that American fans may need some patience.

"It's very tough," Brawn said about the expectations for the Cadillac team this season. "They've got some very good people there. They have been sensible in choosing a lot of experienced people, but it's going to be very tough, so give them a bit of time."

David Croft, a prominent Formula One commentator for Britain's Sky Sports network, urged fans this year to look for development, not podium placement.

"Wherever they start the hope for me is that that's not where they'll finish," he told CBS News at the 2026 Autosport Awards. "They've got the drive and the determination, and they've got the right people in place to be a success eventually in Formula One, but it's going to take a bit of time."

Formula One's growing popularity in the U.S.

According to ESPN, which has long held Formula One broadcasting rights in the U.S., 2025 was the biggest season to date for average viewership for the sport, with 16 of the 24 races setting viewership records. The broadcaster has said that over the past eight years, average viewership per Grand Prix more than doubled, from 554,000 to 1.3 million in the U.S.

Formula One is still dwarfed in the U.S. as a racing spectator sport, with overall viewership for the Nascar Cup Series, for instance, averaging 3.2 million in 2025.

But insiders say the trajectory is undeniable, and encouraging.

"There was a time we'd go to Austin, the U.S. Grand Prix, and nobody would know what Formula One is when we got to passport control, let alone who we were," Croft told CBS. "Now people know who we are and what Formula One is, what it stands for."

Many pundits see the success of Netflix's "Drive to Survive" series behind F1's rising popularity in the U.S.

Croft also credited the addition of two more races in the United States, in Miami and Las Vegas. Alongside races in Texas, Mexico, Canada and Brazil, a total of six F1 races now take place within American time zones, making it easier for fans to tune into the action live, he noted.

Lowdon hopes Cadillac can ride the wave of popularity, and that fans will enjoy following the new team's journey - even if it means settling for relatively small "wins" at first.

"It's really so difficult to achieve success that, if you come along and join the journey ... then [fans] can enjoy, if you like, the minor victories along the way," he said. "Even just producing a car as complex as this is a minor victory in itself."
